Current situation of death education for medical students

Abstract: Objective  To understand the status of medical students facing dead/dying patients in clinical work, the status and the needs of receiving “death education,” and to make suggestions for “death education.” Methods   The study adopted a questionnaire survey and SPSS software for data analysis. Results  7.9% of the respondents had received systematic death education, 57% of the respondents had difficulty handling dead/dying patients in clinical work, and 51.5% of the respondents thought it was essential to carry out death education for clinical medical students.Conclusion  There is a lack of death education for medical students, and the current situation of clinically facing dead/dying patients is not ideal. Death education is urgently needed. Recommendations  Set scientific goals in death education courses; infiltrate death education into the whole training process of medical students; develop effective, timely psychological counselling for medical students.
