Abstract: Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a doctor-patient communication training program designed for standardized training of obstetric residents. Methods Fifty standardized trained obstetric residents participated in this study, were surveyed and assessed by SEGUE before training. Based on the standardized training program for obstetric residents, 5 typical cases were selected for each disease category. The teacher recorded demonstration videos for doctor-patient communication of the five typical cases and sorted out relevant background knowledge. The training courses were conducted among obstetric residents in sequence as follows: video demonstration, group discussion, sorting out case background knowledge, role-based exercises, feedback and evaluation after exercises, and clinical practice. Surveys and SEGUE assessments were conducted again after the training. Non parametric testing methods with paired samples were adopted to evaluate the training effectiveness. Results After the training of doctor-patient communication skills combined with scenario simulation and case-based learning (CBL), the total score of SEGUE evaluation for obstetric residents increased [13.00 (11.00~16.00) vs. 22.00 (20.00~24.00)], with a statistically significant difference (Z=-6.159, P<0.001). The passing rate of SEGUE evaluation has increased, [36.0% (18/50) vs. 98.0% (49/50)], with a statistically significant difference (χ2=43.464, P<0.001). Conclusion The combination of scenario simulation and CBL in doctor-patient communication skills training can effectively improve the communication skills of obstetric residents. It is recommended to include such courses in the standardized training of obstetric residents.
