Application study on content-based instruction teaching in geriatric medicine English teaching

Abstract: Objective To discuss the application effects of content-based instruction (CBI) teaching method in medical English teaching of geriatric medicine. Methods This cross-sectional study was explored in Grade 2012 and 2013 students of Capital Medical University. All of the students were divided into traditional teaching method group (n=37) and CBI group (n=36). There was no difference of gender, age and English level between the two groups. All of the students were taught by Aging and Geriatric Medicine chapter in medical English. After finishing the courses, medical professional English level test was applied to the two groups. Students' English studying interests was also investigated by questionnaires. Results The scores of medical professional English level test in CBI group were higher than those in the traditional teaching method group (P<0.05). The degrees of satisfaction in the improvement of learning motivation, learning method, learning effect and dealing with study difficulties of CBI group were better than those of traditional teaching method group (P<0.05). Conclusion In English teaching of Geriatric medicine, CBI teaching method is better than traditional teaching method.
