Practice, evaluation and significance of medical students oversea lab rotation program

Abstract: Objective  To investigate the rationality and necessity of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) students participating in the University of Michigan (UM) laboratory rotation program; to evaluate the gains of the participants, and the impact of the program on students career development; to improve the program and provide a reference for the further development of oversea lab rotation program for medical students.  Methods  This study uses project document analysis and student questionnaires etc. to investigate the laboratory rotation program jointed hold by PKUHSC and the UM.  Results  Students were generally satisfied with the program, and they were satisfied with the rotation time, content, teaching methods etc. By participating in this program, students had benefited a lot in the aspects of acquiring knowledge and skills in scientific research, improving skills in solving scientific research problems, acquiring knowledge and skills in cross-cultural communication and cooperation, and expanding global health knowledge. In addition, this program also strengthened some students sense of devotion in scientific research, and even affected their career choices. Conclusion  The laboratory rotation program carried out by PKUHSC and UM has been a meaningful exploration in student selection, rotation arrangement, and teaching management etc., and has basically achieved the program goals. This program can be improved by selecting students who are really interested in scientific research, establishing close contact for students and supervisors as soon as possible, and integrating this program with the MD-PhD dual degree program.
