Review of social media information overload and possible countermeasures under COVID-19 epidemic situation

Abstract: Information overload is defined as the experience of feeling burdened by large amounts of information received too fast to be processed or used effectively. Under COVID-19 epidemic situation, not only the epidemic per se may influence individuals’ mental health, prolonged exposure to excessive, repetitive, dubious and variously sourced information via social media may also lead to maladjusted cognitional, emotional or behavioral reactions. This review summarizes the influences and the causes of information overload and concludes the possible countermeasures based on recent studies.
